RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Aceh Tsunami Museum stands as a poignant architectural tribute dedicated to remembering the devastating 2004 tsunami disaster that struck the region. This remarkable institution serves both as a solemn memorial for the victims and an educational center for future generations.
On December 26, 2004, a massive 9.3 magnitude earthquake struck Aceh around 07:58 AM Western Indonesia Time. This violent tremor triggered catastrophic tsunami waves that battered coastal regions bordering the Indian Ocean, making Aceh the hardest-hit area.
The disaster claimed an astonishing 170,000 lives, leaving an indelible scar on the local community and the nation. Consequently, the museum was established not only to honor those who perished but also to function as an emergency evacuation shelter during future calamities.
Officially opened on February 23, 2009, the museum was designed by Ridwan Kamil, who won an international architectural competition in 2007. His visionary design brilliantly captures the tragic essence of the catastrophe while offering a sanctuary of hope and resilience.
Inside, the museum houses over 6,038 diverse collections ranging from historical artifacts and ethnographic items to technological and geological displays. The management regularly rotates these exhibits every six months, ensuring that visitors experience different aspects of the collection during temporary and permanent showcases.
Visitors entering the museum walk through a narrow, dimly lit corridor designed to evoke a deeply emotional reflection of the disaster's terror. This pathway ultimately leads into "The Light of God" room, which displays the hundreds of thousands of names of the tsunami victims.
Located on Jalan Sultan Iskandar Muda in Banda Aceh, the museum is easily accessible and operates daily with affordable ticket pricing. Tourists can visit this profound historical landmark to learn about resilience, pay their respects, and understand the enduring spirit of Aceh.
