RRI.CO.ID, Lombok - Mawi is a secluded surf spot on Lombok’s southern coast, about 30–40 minutes west of Kuta Lombok. Framed by rugged hills, white sand, and clear blue water, the bay combines dramatic scenery with a powerful A-frame reef break.

Mawi produces both left- and right-hand waves, with the left becoming the main attraction as the swell increases. The left is fast, powerful, and often hollow, while the shorter right can provide punchy rides on smaller swells. The sharp coral reef makes Mawi better suited to intermediate and advanced surfers.

The spot works best with southwest swells of around 3–8 feet and east winds providing offshore conditions. Mid to high tide generally offers more manageable conditions, while lower tides expose the shallow reef and make the wave more critical.

During the dry season from May to September, southeast trade winds can create cleaner faces and more favorable surfing conditions. Mawi can still receive swell during the wet season, although onshore winds can make the waves less organized.

Access to the lineup begins from the beach after reaching Mawi by road. The paddle-out is relatively straightforward, but surfers should pay close attention to the reef, particularly around low tide. Strong currents and a sweep toward the cliffs can also make paddling back more demanding when the swell increases.

Getting to Mawi is part of the adventure. From Kuta Lombok, travel west toward Selong Belanak before following the route to Mawi, with the journey taking roughly 30–40 minutes by motorbike or car. The final dirt section can become rough and slippery after rain, so experienced riders or local drivers may be preferable.

Mawi’s main hazard is its sharp coral reef, which becomes particularly exposed at low tide. Surfers should also watch for strong currents, shallow inside sections, and the inside rock, while the limited facilities mean visitors should bring essential supplies.

The wave changes considerably with swell size. Smaller conditions can produce a more playful A-frame, while larger swells turn the left into a faster and more hollow wave with heavier barrel sections. Surfers should avoid riding too far into the shallow inside reef and kick out toward the channel when necessary.

With its secluded setting, powerful left-hand wave, and changing character, Mawi offers a distinctly different surfing experience from Lombok’s more mellow breaks. Its combination of scenic coastline and demanding reef waves makes it a destination for surfers looking for more challenging conditions near Kuta Lombok.
