Outside Gerupuk Packs Powerful Right-Hand Waves in Lombok

RRI.CO.ID, Lombok - Outside Gerupuk is a powerful right-hand reef break at the western tip of Gerupuk Bay, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The spot attracts intermediate and advanced surfers with steep takeoffs, fast walls, and occasional barrel sections when larger swells reach the bay.

Outside Gerupuk is known as a swell magnet that can remain rideable when other breaks around the bay become smaller. Its broad peak produces waves that can run for around 50 to 150 meters, giving experienced surfers room for high-speed turns and long rides.

The wave begins with a steep drop before developing into a fast, open wall that carries considerable power. On larger swells, the takeoff zone can produce short barrel sections, while the deeper channel provides an exit before the wave reaches the shallower inside reef.

South to southwest swells generally provide the best energy for Outside Gerupuk, with waves commonly ranging from 3 to 8 feet and capable of handling larger swells. Mid to high tides provide better coverage over the reef, while surfers should exercise extra caution as the reef becomes shallower during lower tides.

Outside Gerupuk can produce waves throughout the year, although conditions vary with the seasonal swell and wind patterns. The dry season from May to September can bring larger Indian Ocean swells, while the wet season from October to April can still provide rideable waves, particularly during favorable morning wind conditions.

Surfers cannot paddle directly to Outside Gerupuk from the shoreline and need to use a local boat from Gerupuk Village. The boat ride generally takes around five to ten minutes, providing direct access to the lineup while allowing surfers to return to shore between sessions.

Gerupuk Village is located around seven kilometers east of Kuta Lombok, with the drive generally taking about 15 to 20 minutes by scooter. Visitors can park near the harbor before arranging a local boat, while the surrounding fishing village also provides a glimpse of the local Sasak coastal community.

The sharp reef is one of the main hazards at Outside Gerupuk, particularly when the tide is low and more of the reef becomes exposed. Strong currents can develop during larger swells, while surfers should also remain alert to boat traffic around the lineup and avoid the shallow inside section when the wave starts closing out.

With its reliable swell exposure, powerful right-hand walls, and long rides, Outside Gerupuk provides challenging conditions for surfers who are ready to handle stronger reef breaks. Its boat access, dramatic coastal setting, and position within Gerupuk Bay also make it a distinctive part of Lombok’s diverse surfing landscape.
