RRI.CO.ID, North Sipora - Icelands, also known as The Ice, is a left-hand reef break on the northwest coast of Sipora Island, Mentawai Islands. The spot stands out for its dual nature, producing manageable waves on smaller swells and powerful barrels when large swells reach the reef.

During smaller swells, Icelands can produce head-high waves with long, clean walls that allow intermediate surfers to practice turns and maintain their lines. The wave remains relatively approachable during these conditions while still providing enough shape for more experienced surfers to enjoy.

A large west swell completely changes the character of the break. A deep ledge outside the usual takeoff area causes the swell to rise sharply, creating a steep but relatively manageable entry before the wave moves toward its distinctive horseshoe-shaped section.

The wave then bends back toward itself and forms a thick barrel that can produce powerful, hollow sections. On large days, the barrels can reach considerable size, making Icelands one of the notable big-wave breaks in the Mentawai Islands.

Icelands can handle waves from around head-high to triple overhead, with southwest to west swells providing the strongest conditions. Easterly to northeasterly winds can create cleaner wave faces, while mid to high tides generally offer more favorable conditions over the reef.

Unlike many surf spots that depend heavily on a particular season, Icelands can produce waves throughout the year. However, the April to October period generally provides more consistent swell patterns and favorable conditions around the Mentawai Islands.

Surfers usually reach Icelands by boat through surf camps or charter operators based around the Mentawai Islands. Because the wave changes significantly with swell size, surfers need to assess the conditions carefully before entering the water and match their skill level to the conditions.

The shallow coral reef presents a hazard, particularly when the tide drops and more of the reef becomes exposed. Strong currents can also develop around the break, requiring surfers to remain aware of their position throughout the session.

The difference between small- and large-swell conditions makes Icelands particularly distinctive. A relatively relaxed wave on smaller days can transform into a powerful barrel break as the swell increases, demanding greater control, experience, and preparation.

Surfers traveling to Icelands generally fly to Padang before continuing toward Sipora Island and arranging boat transportation to the break. The remote location also means visitors should prepare their equipment and safety supplies before heading out.

With its long left-hand walls, horseshoe-shaped barrel, and dramatic transformation during large swells, Icelands showcases the range of surfing conditions found across the Mentawai Islands.
