RRI.CO.ID, Gianyar –Tampaksiring Palace, is one of Indonesia’s presidential palaces, located in Tampaksiring, Gianyar Regency, Bali. Unlike other presidential palaces in Indonesia, the complex was designed as a retreat in the Balinese highlands, surrounded by tropical vegetation and views of the surrounding landscape.
The palace was built after Indonesia gained independence, making it different from several other presidential palaces that originated during the Dutch colonial period. Construction began in 1957 during the presidency of Soekarno, Indonesia’s first president, and the main complex was completed in 1960.
The palace was designed by Indonesian architect R.M. Soedarsono, who was instructed to create a building that would reflect Indonesia's national identity while fitting into Bali's distinctive cultural and architectural environment. The complex incorporates elements influenced by Balinese architecture while maintaining the functions and facilities required for a modern state residence.
One of the palace's notable features is its location near Tirta Empul temple, an important Hindu temple complex known for its spring water. The palace takes its name from Tampaksiring, an area in central Bali that has long been associated with Balinese religious and cultural traditions.
Tampaksiring Palace consists of several buildings connected by gardens and open spaces. Among them are the main presidential residence, guest accommodations, and other buildings used for official activities, allowing the palace to host both the president and visiting guests.
The palace has been used to receive foreign heads of state and other important guests, as well as for presidential meetings and official retreats. Its relatively secluded setting has also made it suitable for informal discussions and recreation from Indonesia's major urban centers.
Today, Tampaksiring Palace remains part of Indonesia's presidential palace complex and continues to be used for selected official activities. For visitors to Bali, it offers an example of how Indonesia's modern presidential residences have been incorporated into the island's distinctive landscape, architecture, and cultural setting.
