RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Heroes' Monument (Tugu Pahlawan), popularly known as the Farmer's Monument (Tugu Tani), is a well-known public monument in Central Jakarta, Jakarta. Located near the National Monument, the monument stands in an area surrounded by government offices, businesses, and historic neighborhoods.
The monument depicts a male farmer carrying a rifle over his shoulder and his mother offering him a plate of food. The farmer represents Indonesian peasants and the country's struggle for independence, while the mother is commonly understood as symbolizing the support given to those fighting for the nation.
Tugu Tani was inaugurated in 1963 during the presidency of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno. The monument was created by Soviet sculptors Matvey Manizer and his son, Otto Manizer, following a commission from the Indonesian government.
The monument is associated with the Indonesian National Revolution against Dutch colonial rule, which ended with the country's formal transfer of sovereignty in 1949. According to an account associated with the monument, Sukarno was inspired by a story about Indonesian farmers who supported independence fighters during the revolution, which helped shape the monument's design and symbolism.
The monument's location also reflects the vibrant character of Jakarta's city center. It stands close to Menteng, one of Jakarta's historic residential districts, and is within reach of major landmarks and transportation corridors in central Jakarta.
Over the decades, the Heroes' Monument has become part of Jakarta's urban landscape and is frequently used as a reference point when describing locations in the city. Its popular name, Tugu Tani, is also commonly used to identify the surrounding intersection and nearby area.
The Heroes' Monument provides a glimpse into how monuments in Jakarta commemorate the country's independence struggle while also serving practical purposes in everyday urban life. Today, the monument remains a recognizable landmark in central Jakarta and a reminder of the important role attributed to ordinary Indonesians in the country's history.
