RRI.CO.ID, Nias - Lagundri Beach attracts surfers with world-class right-hand waves and a scenic tropical setting on Nias Island, North Sumatra. The beach features white sand and turquoise waters, while gentler waves in the inner section welcome beginner surfers.

Lagundri Bay serves as the main surf spot on Nias and has attracted international surfers since its discovery in the 1970s. The area also includes Sorake, Rockstars, and several other breaks that add to Nias' reputation among surf enthusiasts.

Lagundri Bay produces long, powerful waves with well-shaped walls and multiple sections suitable for barrel rides. On favorable days, surfers can ride waves for hundreds of meters while navigating several sections along the reef.

The main break runs over a shallow reef and generally suits intermediate to advanced surfers seeking powerful and technically demanding waves. Beginners can practice on the gentler inner waves before progressing toward more challenging sections.

Surfers can find the best conditions at Lagundri Beach from April through October, when the waves support consistent sessions. The beach also provides a quieter option for surfers seeking quality right-hand waves away from the busier The Point area.

Surfers should exercise caution around the shallow reef, especially during lower tides when more reef surfaces become exposed. Reef cuts can occur, so visitors should consider suitable protection and carry basic first-aid supplies during their sessions.

The waves can become powerful and fast during larger swells, creating steep walls and demanding takeoffs for surfers. These conditions make the outer sections more suitable for confident surfers who can handle stronger waves.

Visitors can reach Lagundri Bay from Binaka Airport by car or taxi in approximately two hours. Many surf camps and accommodations around Nias also provide airport pickup services for visitors heading to the surf area.

Nias remains relatively remote, with limited access to medical facilities and surf shops in some areas. Surfers should bring essential equipment and spare supplies because replacements may not always be readily available around the island.
