Ranu Segaran Combines Scenic Nature and a Local Majapahit Legend

RRI.CO.ID, Probolinggo - Ranu Segaran combines scenic natural surroundings with a local legend rooted in the community. Located in Segaran Village, Tiris District, Probolinggo, East Java, the lake is accessible by car or motorcycle.
Its cool and lush atmosphere makes Ranu Segaran a relaxing destination for visitors seeking a peaceful natural escape. The lake also provides water activities, including pedal boat rides that allow visitors to enjoy its scenery.
Ranu Segaran charges Rp10,000 per visitor for admission, while pedal boat rental costs Rp5,000. These activities provide visitors with simple ways to experience the lake while enjoying its surrounding natural landscape.
Beyond its scenery, Ranu Segaran is associated with a legend involving two powerful warriors from the Majapahit era. Local tradition said Raden Tirta and Raden Segara became the lake’s eternal guardians.
According to the legend, the two warriors were students of a great sage from the slopes of Mount Lemongan. Their teacher instructed them to undergo a spiritual meditation by immersing themselves in Ranu Segaran.
They reportedly spent 40 days and 40 nights meditating in the lake to obtain a sacred heirloom. On the final day, a red shawl belonging to Dewi Rengganis reportedly appeared as the sought-after spiritual symbol.
The legend said that Dewi Rengganis then appeared before the two warriors, who became captivated by her beauty. Their desire for her reportedly led to a conflict, as both warriors wanted to possess the goddess.
The story continues with Dewi Rengganis becoming angry and waving her shawl toward the two warriors. They reportedly drowned and became eternal guardians of Ranu Segaran after abandoning their spiritual mission.
Although no strong physical evidence has been found linking the warriors to the story, the legend remains deeply rooted locally. Passed down across generations, the tale adds cultural meaning to Ranu Segaran’s natural appeal.
