Ijen Crater Remains Closed Despite Wildfire Being Extinguished

RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - Tourist access to the Ijen Crater Nature Park (TWA Kawah Ijen) in East Java remains temporarily suspended despite initial forest and land fires within the popular destination being successfully put out.
The East Java Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) closed the park, located on the border of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso Regencies, on September 4, 2026, to minimize safety risks for visitors following wildland fires in the area.
"Tourist visits are still closed, and as of today, there has been no circular letter issued by East Java BBKSDA," said Head of TWA Kawah Ijen Rusdi Santoso, on Thursday, September 17, as quoted by Antara.
Rusdi confirmed that active fires within the nature park, renowned for its acidic crater lake and blue fire phenomenon, have been extinguished. Response teams have completed mopping-up operations, sweeping for remaining embers, and rewetting fire-prone areas to prevent reignition.
However, a new wildland fire has broken out nearby over the past three days on the northern slope of Mount Merapi Ungup-Ungup, specifically in the Pasewaran Block, which borders a protected nature reserve.
"The area currently burning falls under North Banyuwangi Perhutani jurisdiction, and it appears the fire has not yet been put out due to difficult terrain," Rusdi explained. ***
