Lembeh Strait and Minahasa Showcase North Sulawesi’s Diversity

RRI.CO.ID, Bitung - Lembeh Strait and Minahasa highlight North Sulawesi’s marine and cultural diversity. Together, they offer travelers distinctive experiences combining underwater beauty, history, traditions, and local life.

Lembeh Strait stretches about 12 kilometers, with a width of approximately 1.2 kilometers. Its waters contain around 95 dive sites, attracting divers and snorkelers seeking unique marine life.

A section measuring roughly one to two kilometers is recognized among the world’s outstanding diving areas. Divers also call Lembeh Strait “The World's Muck Diving Heaven” for its unusual underwater biodiversity.

Beyond its marine attractions, North Sulawesi is home to the Minahasa ethnic group. Minahasa culture remains visible through traditional houses, historical sites, community traditions, and cultural festivals.

The name Minahasa comes from Minaesa or Minaesa'an, meaning “becoming one” or “unity.” Watu Pinawetengan is associated with a historic agreement symbolizing territorial division and community unity.

Minahasa communities include Tontemboan, Tombulu, Tonsea, Toulour, Tonsawang, and Pasan-Ratahan. Each group has distinctive dialects and traditions that enrich the region’s cultural identity.

Travelers can explore Minahasa through arts performances, traditional music, regional dances, culinary exhibitions, and cultural celebrations. Tomohon International Flower Festival is among the region’s prominent annual cultural events.
