Air Kaca Links Morotai's Beauty with World War II History

RRI.CO.ID, Daruba - Air Kaca is a historic spring and tourism destination in Morotai Island Regency, North Maluku. The site brings together natural scenery, wartime history, and local traditions surrounding one of Morotai's notable springs.

During World War II, Air Kaca served as an important water source for American forces stationed in Morotai. The spring was reportedly also used by General MacArthur for bathing and resting.

Air Kaca, which means 'glass water', is actually an underground river that emerges from underground. Its name reflects the remarkable clarity of its water, although the spring is no longer as clear today.

The spring once supplied drinking water and provided bathing facilities for General MacArthur and other officers. Allied forces reportedly restricted local access while the surrounding area remained under their use.

Beyond its historical significance, Air Kaca is surrounded by local beliefs passed down through generations. Some Morotai residents believe supernatural figures inhabit the spring, but are believed not to disturb visitors.

Local communities also associate Air Kaca with blessings and traditional beliefs concerning health and fertility. These stories form part of the cultural heritage surrounding the destination and contribute to its continuing appeal.

Air Kaca is located in Wamama, approximately five minutes from central Daruba by motorcycle. From the tourism sign, visitors walk about 50 meters before reaching the spring.

The destination is also situated near Landasan Pitu, another historical attraction in Morotai. Its location allows visitors to combine natural exploration with stories connected to Indonesia's World War II heritage.
