RRI.CO.ID, Semarang - State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) initiated the KAI Explore: Exploration of Kedungjati Station and Tuntang Station program on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, inviting content creators, historical preservationists, and railfans to examine the historic Kedungjati–Tuntang corridor in Semarang Regency, Central Java.
Held from September 8 to 9, 2026, to mark 159 years of Indonesian railway history, the immersive event highlights the heritage assets built by the Netherlands Indies Railway Company (Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij or NIS). Originally opened on May 21, 1873, to connect Kedungjati with Ambarawa, the line remains a critical chapter in Java’s early transport infrastructure development.
Operating statistics show that Kedungjati Station recorded 13,132 passenger movements between January and August 2026, comprising 6,700 boardings and 6,432 alighting passengers. Meanwhile, Tuntang Station, constructed in 1871 and opened in 1873, maintains distinct NIS architectural elements and serves as a key heritage link to the nearby Ambarawa Railway Museum.
KAI designed the program around three core pillars, Experience, Explore, and Express, encouraging participants to generate articles, photography, and digital content showcasing regional tourism and cultural preservation along the historic line.
KAI corporate executives underscored that public engagement programs and heritage conservation foster a deeper understanding of how historical rail networks drive regional connectivity and economic growth.
"Through KAI Explore, the public can gain a closer understanding of the long journey of Indonesian railways, including the Kedungjati–Tuntang line, which has held historical value since the earliest days of national transport development," Deputy President of Corporate Communication at KAI Anne Purba said in Semarang on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
She emphasized KAI's commitment to collaborative heritage preservation and community engagement. "KAI continues to open spaces for collaboration with communities and stakeholders to introduce historic railway assets, every line carries stories that form part of our shared learning journey, connecting historical preservation with tourism, regional connectivity, and local economic activity," Anne added. ***
