RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - As it approaches its 270th anniversary, the Yogyakarta City Administration is determined not to treat the anniversary celebration as merely an annual public festival. Under the theme Otentik Konkret (Authentic and Tangible), a series of seven flagship events throughout October 2026 has been designed to demonstrate that preserving Yogyakarta’s culture safeguards its identity while directly boosting community welfare.

“Why are we holding seven flagship events, along with supporting events and ‘road to’ activities? Because we want to increase the number of visitors to Yogyakarta,” said Yogyakarta Mayor, Hasto Wardoyo, during a press conference in Yogyakarta on Monday, 7 September 2026.

According to him, the seven flagship events to be held in October are YK Festisale, the Symphony of 1,001 Batik Artisans on Malioboro, Malioboro Run, Sarkemfest, Wayang Jogja Night Carnival (WJNC), Kustomfest, and Otentik City Rally. Through promotions and discounts involving various sectors, including trade, micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), retail, hotels, and other businesses, the city hopes to stimulate economic activity.

“So essentially, we want the length of stay for people visiting Yogyakarta to be longer. That’s why we’re trying to spread the events not just across days, but across the entire month,” he said, as quoted by Antara.

What sets the peak of Yogyakarta City’s 270th anniversary apart is the staging of the Wayang Jogja Night Carnival (WJNC) on 7 October. This year, the event will be held along Malioboro Street extending to the Zero Kilometer Point so that spectators can enjoy it more comfortably.

The mayor also noted that similar events in previous years have drawn more than 40,000 spectators, and the route adjustment is intended to accommodate even larger crowds.

“We’re extending it further from the Malioboro railway tracks all the way to the Zero Kilometer Point so it can be enjoyed. Malioboro is the top location and the center of public interest. That’s why, out of respect for Malioboro visitors, we want them not to be inconvenienced during WJNC,” he said.

Several flagship events scheduled for September–October carry the “Otentik Konkret” theme. Through this theme, the activities are expected to strengthen the city’s identity while delivering concrete works that benefit the community.

According to the mayor, the theme serves as both reinforcement and direction so that all activities highlight Yogyakarta’s distinctive character. The authenticity value is proven when local distinctiveness is not only an identity marker, but also a means to improve public welfare.

“The Otentik Konkret theme is very fitting because it speaks to Yogyakarta’s identity. And konkret [tangible] refers to how that identity can be realized in action and works that ultimately benefit us all,” he said. ***
