RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s rich traditions of fitness and herbal remedies are key assets for capturing the global wellness tourism market. In response, the Ministry of Tourism is accelerating efforts to map local potential across regions so the country can compete with leading global wellness destinations.

Acting Deputy for Industry and Investment at the Ministry of Tourism, Rizki Handayani, said fitness tourism has strong potential to become one of Indonesia’s tourism strengths.

“Wellness is one of the tourism products that provides enlightenment for tourists. When they return from Indonesia, they feel enlightened after undergoing therapy or experiencing Indonesia’s nature,” she said in a ministry press statement in Jakarta on Friday, September 4, 2026.

She emphasized that developing the fitness tourism business ecosystem must be comprehensive and integrated, involving relevant stakeholders.

To that end, the Ministry of Tourism is working to develop high‑quality fitness tourism through collaboration with related institutions.

The development of fitness tourism will involve the Ministry of Health, regional Health Agencies, regional Tourism and Creative Economy Agencies, the Indonesian SPA Association (ASPI), the Indonesian Association of Beauty and Aesthetic Clinic Managers (PRASTIKA), the Indonesian Fitness Center Entrepreneurs Association (PPPKI), the Bali Spa & Wellness Association (BSWA), as well as fitness tourism business operators.

Rizki said the Ministry of Tourism is compiling an Indonesian fitness business catalog, which it will later integrate into the Indonesia Travel database.

According to Antara, the catalog is an important part of mapping the potential and ecosystem of the national fitness tourism sector. Through this catalog, tourists are expected to access information on fitness products and services across various regions more easily.

The government is encouraging the development of integrated, high‑quality, and sustainable fitness tourism businesses that reflect Indonesia’s distinctiveness.

The Ministry of Tourism will partner with hotel operators, travel service providers, and exhibition organizers to strengthen the fitness tourism business ecosystem from upstream to downstream.

Rizki noted that Indonesia’s natural beauty, cultural richness, and diverse fitness traditions across regions are key assets for delivering distinctive, high‑quality fitness tourism experiences.

The development of fitness tourism and the diversification of tourism service products are expected to boost the growth of Indonesia’s tourism industry and contribute to improving community welfare. ***
