RRI.CO.ID, Central Java - Candi Prambanan or Prambanan Temple, also known as Roro Jonggrang Temple, is one of Indonesia's most iconic cultural landmarks. Located near the border of Central Java and Yogyakarta, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is Indonesia's largest Hindu temple complex.
Built in the ninth century, Prambanan was dedicated to the Trimurti, the three major Hindu deities Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The central Shiva Temple is the largest and tallest structure, reaching 47 meters.
Local legend attributes the temple's construction to Bandung Bondowoso, who supposedly built it in one night. Archaeological research, however, indicates that the monumental complex was constructed over a much longer period.
The temple complex suffered extensive damage from earthquakes and volcanic activity, including eruptions of Mount Merapi. Restoration efforts began in the early twentieth century and have continued to preserve the site as an important Indonesian heritage landmark.
Prambanan is also renowned for its detailed reliefs depicting scenes from the Ramayana epic. These carvings provide visitors with a glimpse into the artistic traditions, religious beliefs, and storytelling culture of ancient Java.
The complex is surrounded by extensive green grounds, offering visitors space to explore and relax beyond the temple structures. Its combination of monumental architecture, historical significance, and landscaped surroundings attracts travelers from Indonesia and around the world.
Visitors can also experience Indonesian performing arts through the Ramayana Ballet at an open-air theater near the temple. The performance brings the ancient epic to life through traditional dance, music, costumes, and dramatic storytelling.
Prambanan also provides various visitor facilities, including parking areas, information services, restrooms, food stalls, souvenir shops, and children's areas. These facilities support travelers exploring one of Indonesia's most significant cultural destinations.
For international travelers, Prambanan offers a powerful introduction to Indonesia's Hindu heritage and ancient Javanese civilization. Its monumental temples, centuries-old stories, and continuing cultural traditions make it an enduring symbol of Indonesia's diverse heritage.
