Exploring Carstensz Pyramid, the Snow-Capped Peak in Papua

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – In a tropical country like Indonesia, snow may seem like something far removed from everyday life. Yet, deep in the interior of Papua, white snow still remains at an altitude of nearly 5,000 meters above sea level. This is where Carstensz Pyramid rises.

Also known as Puncak Jaya, the peak stands at around 4,884 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in Indonesia. Located in the central mountain range of Papua, it is one of the most challenging climbing destinations for adventurers from around the world.

UNESCO recognizes Carstensz Pyramid as the highest point in Southeast Asia and part of the landscape of Lorentz National Park, which stretches from coastal areas to snow-capped mountains. However, Carstensz is about much more than its elevation.

The journey to its summit is an experience that brings together tropical forests, valleys, steep rocky terrain, cold temperatures, and largely untouched mountain landscapes. In a single expedition, climbers can experience dramatic changes in the natural environment.

The presence of snow is one of Carstensz Pyramid's biggest attractions. Indonesia lies in the tropics, but the extreme elevation causes temperatures around the summit to drop to freezing levels.

The Name Carstensz and Its History

The name Carstensz comes from Jan Carstenszoon, a Dutch explorer who reported seeing snow on the mountains of Papua in the 17th century. His report was initially considered unbelievable because Papua lies in the tropics.

However, Carstenszoon's observation was eventually proven to be true. Over the course of Indonesia's history, the mountain and surrounding range have been known by different names. The terms Puncak Jaya and Carstensz Pyramid are now commonly used, particularly in the international mountaineering community.

For climbers around the world, Carstensz Pyramid has a distinctive appeal. The peak is recognized as one of the world's major climbing destinations and is included in the popular Seven Summits list.

The Journey Begins Far Below the Summit

For climbers, the journey to Carstensz begins long before the summit comes into view. Reaching the area requires careful planning. Timika is one of the common gateways to the region. From there, travelers can continue to the starting point of the climb, depending on the expedition route they choose.

Indonesia Travel currently lists four walking routes to Carstensz, including the Timika–Dolinokogo (Tsinga) route and several routes from Nabire through Ilaga or Sugapa. The journey into the mountains is not always easy. Limited transportation, unpredictable weather, challenging terrain, and access conditions in Papua mean that expeditions require more time and flexibility than an ordinary trip.

Because of the technical nature of the climb, expeditions are generally undertaken with experienced operators and guides who understand the conditions of the area. Indonesia Travel also lists several operators that handle Carstensz expeditions.

From Tropical Forests to a World of Ice

One of the most fascinating aspects of the journey to Carstensz is the changing landscape. The expedition can begin in Papua's lush and humid tropical environment. Dense forests gradually give way to more open mountain landscapes.

The higher the journey goes, the more dramatically the surroundings change. Trees become increasingly sparse. The air becomes thinner and colder. Rocky terrain dominates the route. In the distance, mountain peaks emerge above the clouds.

Exploring a Region Rich in Biodiversity

The mountain region is part of the greater Lorentz landscape, which is home to extraordinary biodiversity. UNESCO records Lorentz National Park as covering approximately 2.35 million hectares, making it the largest protected area in Southeast Asia. Its ecosystems extend from the sea to high mountain areas and include numerous endemic species.

Another distinctive feature of the region is the presence of Indigenous communities that have lived in the mountains of Papua for generations. UNESCO records several Indigenous groups in the Lorentz area, including the Amungme, Dani, Moni, Nduga, Asmat, Kamoro, and Sempan communities.

For this reason, a journey to Carstensz should not be viewed solely as a mountain expedition. It is also an opportunity to understand the natural landscape and the communities that have shaped Papua's cultural heritage.

Habema and Lorentz: Extending the Journey

If time and conditions allow, the surrounding areas of Papua's mountains offer other experiences worth exploring. Lake Habema, for example, is located in a highland area surrounded by mountains, featuring expansive grasslands and alpine wetlands. Meanwhile, Lorentz National Park offers a vast landscape ranging from coastal ecosystems to alpine environments.

Lorentz National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The area is renowned for its exceptional diversity of ecosystems and geology.
