RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - UNESCO has begun the first revalidation of Indonesia's Ijen Geopark since its designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2023. The evaluation is taking place in Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, East Java, from August 3 to 6, 2026.

The assessment is conducted by UNESCO Global Geopark assessors Dr. Andreas Schüller of Germany and Qinling Zhongnanshan of China. The mandatory review is held every four years to ensure the geopark continues meeting international standards.

The revalidation will determine whether Ijen Geopark retains its Green Card status or receives a Yellow Card or Red Card. The results reflect UNESCO's evaluation of conservation, education, community empowerment, and sustainable management.

Banyuwangi Regent, Ipuk Fiestiandani, said the assessment is an opportunity to demonstrate Indonesia's commitment to sustainable geopark management. She said Ijen Geopark integrates nature, culture, and local communities into a single sustainable ecosystem.

"The Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark ecosystem is managed by integrating nature, culture, and communities into one sustainable system," Ipuk said.

During the assessment, the UNESCO team visited the Ijen Geology Information Center, Kemiren Traditional Village, and several creative economy centers. The itinerary also includes Alas Purwo National Park and Pangpang Bay as part of the geopark landscape.

Dr. Andreas Schüller praised Banyuwangi's natural scenery and the region's management efforts since receiving UNESCO recognition. He said local authorities understand that geoparks extend beyond geological conservation.

"A geopark is not only about geology, but also about people, with communities as the main actors. I see a strong commitment from the Regent and all stakeholders," he said.

The revalidation is expected to reinforce Indonesia's commitment to protecting geological heritage while promoting education, cultural preservation, and sustainable tourism. The evaluation also supports the long-term development of Ijen Geopark within the UNESCO Global Geopark network.
