North Maluku Hosts International Bird Race Competition

RRI.CO.ID, Tayawi - Indonesia's first International Bird Race Competition in North Maluku opened at Aketajawe Lolobata National Park in Tayawi on Monday, July 27, 2026. The event promotes biodiversity conservation and nature-based tourism through birdwatching and photography.

The competition was organized by the Aketajawe Lolobata National Park Authority. Participants included university students, private sector representatives, professional photographers, and international contestants.

North Maluku Regional Secretary, Samsuddin A. Kadir, welcomed the event at one of Indonesia's richest biodiversity sites. He said the competition showcases North Maluku's unique natural heritage to wider audiences.

Head of Aketajawe Lolobata National Park, Budhi Chandra, said the event combines birdwatching and bird photography. The competition runs from July 27 to 29, 2026.

Participants compete in birding and bird photography categories. The event also strengthens conservation awareness and Indonesia's birdwatching community.

The program included the release of white cockatoos (Cacatua alba) and Chattering Lories (Lorius garrulus). The conservation activity was conducted with experts from the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry.

"By prioritizing nature conservation, North Maluku is ready not only to protect ecosystem sustainability, but also to create sustainable economic opportunities for local communities and become a leading destination recognized nationally and internationally," he said.

The competition also marks preparations for Indonesia's National Nature Conservation Day. It reflects the provincial government's commitment to protecting biodiversity and advancing sustainable ecotourism.
