RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - Indonesia is preparing the Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark for its international revalidation process in August 2026. The preparation was discussed during a coordination meeting led by Indonesia's Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, in Banyuwangi, East Java, on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

The meeting involved the Banyuwangi Regency Government, Bondowoso Regency Government, Ijen Geopark management, conservation authorities, and the Ministry of Tourism. The discussion focused on maintaining Ijen Geopark's Green Card status under UNESCO Global Geopark evaluation standards.

Ijen Geopark was designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark network member in 2023. The revalidation process is conducted every four years to ensure geoparks continue meeting international standards in geological, environmental, cultural, and community development aspects.

Widiyanti said the upcoming evaluation is a shared responsibility among stakeholders. She emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination to follow up on recommendations from UNESCO assessors.

"Our target is certainly to maintain the Green Card. Therefore, stronger coordination is needed so all recommendations from the assessors can be followed up, including strengthening geological heritage promotion, improving accessibility and partnerships, and managing the blue fire area while prioritizing safety and sustainable tourism principles," she said.

Ijen Geopark features geological diversity, biodiversity, and cultural diversity while supporting local economic development. The Minister expressed confidence that the geopark can maintain its Green Card status during the UNESCO Global Geopark assessment.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani, said the local government appreciates the support from Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism during the revalidation process. She emphasized that the recognition is a responsibility to preserve nature, strengthen education, empower communities, and develop sustainable local economies.

Chairman of the Ijen Geopark Management Agency, Abdillah Baraas, said the organization has implemented UNESCO recommendations through collaboration between local, provincial, and central governments. The recommendations include strengthening geological research, improving heritage promotion, adding educational information panels, and increasing national and international events.

Following the meeting, Widiyanti visited the Ijen Geopark Geological Information Center (PIGGI), an educational facility that provides information about the geopark. The visit highlighted Indonesia's commitment to protecting natural heritage while developing sustainable tourism.
