RRI.CO.ID, Sleman - Perched atop the verdant slopes of Gumuk Ijo Hill in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, Candi Ijo (Green Temple) stands as Yogyakarta’s highest Hindu temple, offering travelers a seamless blend of ninth-century heritage and unrivaled panoramic vistas over the surrounding lowlands.

Constructed during the ancient Mataram Kingdom era, the Hindu temple complex sits approximately 410 meters above sea level. Its high-altitude setting makes it an increasingly popular destination for visitors seeking to step back in time while taking in sweeping, uninhibited views of Yogyakarta's cityscape and rolling green hills.

Visitors exploring the terraced grounds can examine well-preserved stone architecture while enjoying a cool, mountain breeze. The elevated vantage point provides a serene escape from urban traffic, making the complex a favored retreat for photography enthusiasts and heritage travelers alike.

The temple complex is open daily to the public from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., with an entrance fee set at an accessible IDR 15,000 (USD 0.83) per person, granting full access to the temple courtyards and viewing areas.

Defasela, a visitor exploring the site on Thursday, July 23, 2026, noted that timing is key to capturing the location’s full charm, recommending a late afternoon visit as temperatures drop and the sun begins to set.

"It is better if you come here in the afternoon because besides being cool, you can enjoy the sunset with a view of Yogyakarta City from its courtyard," Defasela said.

Defasela added that the tranquil atmosphere makes the temple an ideal spot to unwind away from the crowded city center. "The view is extraordinary, the atmosphere is calm, and the combination of history with natural panorama makes the visiting experience feel very memorable," she said.

With its ancient Hindu architectural features, tranquil hill-station climate, and spectacular sunset views over the valley below, Candi Ijo continues to cement its status as one of Yogyakarta’s premier cultural landmarks. (Naura Sofia-EN)
