RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - Klaten Regency received an award for innovation in regional development and food security. The recognition was presented during the Jogja Brand and Business Awards (JBBA) 2026 in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
The award recognizes Klaten's efforts to integrate agriculture and tourism into a balanced regional development strategy. The initiative also strengthens food security amid growing pressure from agricultural land conversion.
Klaten Regent, Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo, said the regency was historically known for its legendary Rojo Lele rice. He said preserving that identity now requires innovation that supports both farmers and future economic growth.
He explained that Klaten could no longer rely solely on agriculture to sustain regional development. Tourism has become a strategic sector for diversifying the local economy while creating broader opportunities.
Hamenang said Klaten's historic identity as the home of Rojo Lele rice requires continuous innovation to remain relevant. He stressed that food security must evolve alongside regional development.
"Klaten has long been known for its legendary Rojo Lele rice. However, over time, that identity has gradually faded, so we need to innovate to ensure food security remains strong," he said.
Hamenang added that Klaten's tourism sector has experienced significant growth over recent years. Tourist arrivals have reached around 7.5 million, making Klaten one of Central Java's most popular destinations.
He said the achievement reflects strong collaboration between the Indonesian central government, provincial authorities, and local communities. The award also serves as a meaningful milestone ahead of Klaten Regency's 222nd anniversary celebration.
