RRI.CO.ID, Palembang - Nestled on Jalan Ki Gede Ing Suro, Palembang, South Sumatra, the Zainal Songket Museum continues to serve as a vital cultural bastion, safeguarding centuries-old handwoven textiles, including rare 300-year-old pieces spun from genuine gold thread, to educate the public and the younger generation.

Established nearly 14 years ago, the private museum was born out of the vision of the late Kiagus Zainal Arifin. Today, his son and current manager, Kiagus Imron, carries on the family legacy of turning private heirlooms into a public educational sanctuary.

The museum began with a collection of family heirloom songket that was previously kept in chests. These pieces were then put on display so that the public could learn the history of Palembang's songket.

The museum’s crown jewels are its remarkably preserved antique fabrics. Several of the masterworks on display are estimated to be over three centuries old, dating back to a time when master weavers utilized authentic gold threads to create the shimmering, intricate geometric patterns that define traditional Palembang identity.

For Imron, the preservation of these textiles is directly linked to regional pride. He emphasizes that the museum plays a critical role in preventing local history from being forgotten in the digital age, frequently hosting high school and university students who visit to study the philosophy, motifs, and historical value woven into each fabric.

"We must not, as people of Palembang, remain ignorant of our own region's songket history," Imron asserted, highlighting the museum's role as a primary cultural reference point.

Beyond its academic contributions, the Zainal Songket Museum has organically grown into a popular cultural tourism destination. Drawing both domestic and international travelers, the museum's renown has spread primarily through organic internet searches, social media travel logs, and enthusiastic word-of-mouth recommendations from previous visitors.
