RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - ndonesian Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, conducted an inspection of the historic suite once occupied by General Sudirman in 1946 at the Grand Hotel De Djokja on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

The room, which served as a strategic base during the revolutionary era, is currently entering the final stages of a comprehensive revitalization project aimed at preserving Indonesia’s wartime heritage.

The Minister emphasized that the suite holds immense historical weight and must be meticulously maintained. He noted that the space functions as more than just high-end accommodation, it serves as a vital landmark of the Indonesian struggle for independence.

"This room is not just a hotel room, but a part of the nation's collective memory that we must guard and care for together," Minister Fadli Zon said during the visit, as quoted by the ministry's official website.

The broader revitalization of the Grand Hotel De Djokja, a heritage building dating back to 1911, reflects a commitment to breathing new life into cultural landmarks without stripping away their identity. The Minister stressed that the process must strike a balance between historical preservation and economic viability.

"We want to ensure that this revitalization not only beautifies the physical structure but also strengthens the historical and cultural identity inherent in this building," he added.

The hotel has witnessed multiple eras of Indonesian history, particularly during the period when Yogyakarta served as the capital of the Republic. Today, the property is managed by InJourney Hospitality, a state-owned enterprise (BUMN) tourism ecosystem.

Under this management, the hotel is being transformed into a "heritage hotel" concept that prioritizes architectural authenticity and cultural attraction.

The inspection was also attended by the President Director of InJourney Hospitality, Christine Hutabarat, along with various officials and prominent Indonesian artists.

As the project nears completion, the Minister expressed hope that the Grand Hotel De Djokja would serve as a "best practice" model for cultural heritage preservation across Indonesia. He envisions the building evolving into an educational space where the public can deepen their appreciation for the nation’s cultural and historical legacy. ***
