RRI.CO.ID, Surabaya - Five students from Nahdlatul Ulama University Surabaya (Unusa) in East Java have processed fruit peel waste into an eco-enzyme-based shoe cleaner. Named SMARTFOAM, the product comes in foam form and can be used without water.
The SMARTFOAM team consists of Baroatus Silmi, Dhurrotun Nafisah, Naily Zakiyatul K, Sania 'Ainiyati, and Ahda Dini Salsabila. They developed the product under the Student Creativity Program in Entrepreneurship (PKM-K), supervised by Rudi Umar Susanto.
“Through SMARTFOAM, we aim to present a practical shoe-cleaning solution that does not require water. We also want to transform fruit peel waste, which would otherwise be discarded, into something useful,” said SMARTFOAM team leader, Baroatus Silmi, on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
SMARTFOAM uses eco-enzyme derived from fruit peel waste, blended with methyl ester sulfonate, water, NaCl, and essential oil. The product targets students, university learners, workers, sneaker enthusiast communities, and urban residents.
“The use of eco-enzyme is part of our effort to apply zero-waste principles. Fruit peel waste that was previously thrown away can be processed into a beneficial and economically valuable product,” said Baroatus.
The team also conducted laboratory testing to support product development. Test results showed that SMARTFOAM has an inhibition zone of 25.5 millimeters against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
“Looking ahead, we plan to develop additional scent variants and offer travel-size packaging. We are also open to collaborating with sneaker enthusiast communities and environmental groups,” added Baroatus.
SMARTFOAM’s development spanned from market surveys to production and packaging. The product is marketed through bazaars, car-free day events at Bungkul Park in Surabaya, campus activities, social media, and e-commerce platforms. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
