Indonesia Wins Three Medals at International Nuclear Science Olympiad

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s young scientific talents have earned international recognition by securing three medals at the 3rd International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO), held in Saudi Arabia from August 2 to 9, 2026, following intensive academic preparation led by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

Coordinated through BRIN's Polytechnic Institute of Nuclear Technology (Poltek Nuklir) in collaboration with the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas) and the International Nuclear Agency (INuA) Indonesia, the delegation underwent rigorous theoretical and practical training before competing. The effort yielded silver medals for Gusti Komang Abhika Atmaja and Aloysius Gonzaga Duta Setyawan, while Faris Patria Chariansyah secured a bronze medal.

Student Hilmy Lazuardhy Nurramadhan also represented the four-member student team, guided by Poltek Nuklir team leaders Fifi Nurfiana and Lutfi Aditya Hasnowo. The international event was held under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Project Number RAS0095, which supports secondary and tertiary nuclear science and technology education across the region with funding support from the IAEA.

Preparation for the global competition was executed under Poltek Nuklir BRIN’s Community Service (PkM) scheme. The intensive coaching program ran online from July 6 to 24, 2026, followed by hands-on practical training at the Poltek Nuklir campus from July 27 to 31, 2026.

Official organizers expressed hope that the achievements would serve as a catalyst to further introduce nuclear technology to the younger generation and nurture high-caliber talent to advance Indonesia's future scientific capabilities.

Academic leaders and team mentors highlighted that structured preparation, multi-agency collaboration, and international support were essential in driving student performance on the global stage. Director of Poltek Nuklir BRIN Zainal Arief, who served as Indonesia's National Project Counterpart (NPC) for the event, commended the collective effort behind the victory.

"Securing three medals at the 3rd INSO is not only an achievement for the students, but also reflects the results of the guidance, mentoring, and collaboration of various parties in supporting the development of the younger generation in the nuclear field," Zainal said on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as quoted on BRIN's official website.

Team leader and Poltek Nuklir lecturer Fifi Nurfiana expressed pride in the students' dedication throughout the process. "We are proud of the Indonesian team's efforts during the 3rd INSO. From the coaching phase to the competition, the students demonstrated incredible spirit and hard work,hopefully, this experience serves as motivation for them to keep growing and inspiring Indonesia's younger generation in the field of nuclear science," Fifi expressed.
