RRI.CO.ID, Shandong - Indonesia officially has its first satellite in collaboration with China, named Lampung-1, which was launched from off the coast of Haiyang City, Shandong Province, China, on Wednesday, August 5 2026. This satellite is a new symbol of space technology cooperation between the two countries, as well as marking Indonesia's step in expanding its ability to monitor the earth from space.
This project is part of cooperation between Indonesia and China in the fields of space technology, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and human resource development. This collaboration involves the Chinese commercial space company, STAR.VISION, together with government partners in Indonesia.
What makes Lampung-1 different from satellites in general is its ability to process artificial intelligence directly in orbit, with a computing capacity of up to 400 TOPS (Tera Operations per Second). With this technology, satellites not only take pictures of the earth's surface, but can also analyze the data directly before sending it to ground stations.
This collaboration plan began with the signing of a memorandum of understanding in May 2025 between the Lampung Provincial Government, STAR.VISION, Oriental Maritime Space Port, and a number of partners in China. The launch of Lampung-1 itself took place at the same time as two other satellites, Oriental Smart Eye Hyperspectral-01 and Hyperspectral-02, using the Jielong-3 Y12 rocket.
To expand the benefits of this technology nationally, STAR.VISION is also collaborating with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to expand the use of remote sensing data in Indonesia. The company also handed over the TerraVista application platform to BRIN to strengthen national satellite data analysis capacity.
The Governor of Lampung, Rahmat Mirzani Djausal, said that the presence of this satellite would help make more accurate data-based policy decisions. "Lampung-1 will help us see regional conditions more quickly, more broadly and with more precision so that the policies taken truly answer the needs of the community," he said.
