RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Every August 6, Indonesia observes National Space Day as a moment to highlight the importance of advancing space science and technology in supporting the nation's development. The commemoration also serves as a reminder of Indonesia's long journey in building its capabilities in the space sector.

Space activities encompass a wide range of efforts related to the exploration and utilization of outer space, including the development of satellites, rockets, and technologies that support communications, Earth observation, and scientific research. Today, space technology plays an increasingly important role in supporting national development across various sectors.

Indonesia's journey in space development began during the presidency of Sukarno with the establishment of the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) in 1963. Since then, the country has continued to advance research and innovation in aerospace and space technology as part of its efforts to strengthen national technological capabilities.

In addition, National Space Day aims to promote national self-reliance, enhance technological competitiveness, and maximize the use of space technology to improve public welfare. Space-based technologies have supported a wide range of services, including communications, broadcasting, Earth observation, disaster mitigation, and the expansion of internet access across Indonesia.

The government is also continuing to promote the development of space infrastructure, including plans to establish a spaceport in Indonesia. The facility is expected to support domestic satellite and rocket launches while strengthening research capacity, innovation, and international cooperation in the space sector.

Through the observance of National Space Day, Indonesia seeks to further strengthen its research and innovation capabilities in space technology. The continued development of the country's space sector is expected not only to support national development but also to enhance Indonesia's contribution to the advancement of science and technology on the global stage.
