RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 final against Thailand proved to be a defining experience for Indonesia’s national team, widely regarded as a valuable rehearsal before facing tougher competition at the Asian Cup.
Indonesia showed resilience after falling behind, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. The Garuda squad eventually prevailed 4–2 on penalties after a 2–2 draw in regular time.
Football analyst Lucas Aditya said Indonesia’s fighting spirit and character will be vital heading into the Asian Cup. “This is a good test for Indonesia because the opponents at the Asian Cup will be much stronger. It’s like a school try‑out, very useful for the national team,” Lucas told Pro 3 RRI on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
He emphasized that the winning mentality forged through the ASEAN Cup must be maintained. The players, he noted, now have valuable experience in handling high‑pressure matches. Lucas also praised Indonesia’s determination throughout the tournament, urging the team to carry the same spirit when facing Japan, Qatar, and Thailand in the upcoming Asian Cup.
Indonesia previously reached the Round of 16 at the Asian Cup. Lucas expressed hope that coach John Herdman’s squad can achieve an even stronger result this time. “We already have a good track record by advancing to the Round of 16. Now we must aim for greater success,” he said.
Lucas pointed out that several Indonesian players have gained experience in European competitions, which helps build a winning mentality and inspires teammates. “The spirit and mentality to be champions can spread across the squad. We already have that mindset, and most importantly, our players must develop a hunger for lifting trophies,” he added.
Indonesia’s ASEAN Cup victory ended a 35‑year wait for a regional title. The next challenge, Lucas stressed, is proving that champion’s mentality on the bigger stage of Asian football. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
