RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – FIFA President Gianni Infantino, said Indonesian football has made rapid progress in recent years, particularly in governance, investment, competitions, and the performance of the national team.
“I think Indonesian football has made incredible progress over the last few years. We know that some years ago, the situation of football in Indonesia was quite complicated,” Infantino said after meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday, 6 October 2026.
He praised the transformation carried out by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) under the leadership of Erick Thohir. According to him, the changes have contributed to the development of Indonesian football in recent years.
Infantino also highlighted the progress of Indonesia’s national team and youth teams, which have begun to show strong performances in various competitions. However, he said the development of Indonesian football still needs to be expanded, particularly by strengthening football at the school level.
“Indonesia’s future is also built in Indonesia. We hosted the FIFA U-17 World Cup here a few years ago. We need to do more in schools, in school football,” he said.
According to the FIFA President, clubs also need to improve the management and operation of stadiums so they can generate more revenue, which can then be reinvested in football development.
He added that football development cannot be carried out by one country alone. Therefore, Indonesia needs to strengthen cooperation with countries across the ASEAN region to collectively improve the quality of football.
