RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has expressed his joy and pride over Indonesia’s success in winning the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 after defeating Thailand in a dramatic final at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta, on Monday, October 5, 2026.
Indonesia secured the title after winning 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out. The two teams had previously played to a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes of play.
The victory made Indonesia the inaugural champion of the FIFA ASEAN Cup. Prabowo, who watched the match in person, said the players’ determination demonstrated a never-give-up spirit.
“I’m happy. I think it is something to be proud of, and this is an example of a spirit that never gives up,” Prabowo said after watching the match.
Prabowo also praised Indonesia’s achievement in winning the international competition organized by FIFA in the ASEAN region.
“And we succeeded. And this may be the first time in history that we have won a FIFA international match,” he said.
Indonesia’s journey to the title was far from easy. After taking the lead through Dean James late in regulation time, Indonesia conceded an equalizer from Thailand.
Thailand then took the lead in extra time before Elkan Baggott equalized for Indonesia. The match ultimately had to be decided by a penalty shootout.
In the shoot-out, all four Indonesian penalty takers successfully converted their attempts. Goalkeeper Emil Audero also played a key role in the victory after saving one of Thailand’s penalties.
Indonesia eventually won 4-2 to secure the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 trophy for the first time.
