Indonesia’s Historic ASEAN Cup Win Marks New Era Under Herdman

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s first FIFA ASEAN Cup title gives the national team a historic foundation to build confidence, strengthen team unity and pursue further success under head coach John Herdman.

Indonesia secured the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup title after defeating Thailand 4-2 on penalties in the final at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Monday night, October 5.

Herdman said he was proud to lead Indonesia to its first title in the competition’s history. "This is a proud moment for Indonesia. The first trophy in history," Herdman said at a post-match press conference at GBK Main Stadium on Monday, as quoted by Antara.

The English coach acknowledged that the final was difficult, as were other finals he had experienced with teams throughout his coaching career. However, he said, he was proud of his players for delivering the championship to the nation.

The players contributed by scoring goals and helping build a strong and united team throughout the tournament. "That was our mission. No matter how long it took, the only thing that mattered was lifting the trophy for all of you, for this country, and making you proud," he said.

Herdman also praised the support of Indonesian fans, who continued to back the Garuda squad from the beginning of the tournament through the final. "Thank you to everyone who came tonight and gave us their support," he concluded.

The title provides Indonesia with an important achievement as the team prepares for future international challenges, including the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. ***
