RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia gained a positive start to its BWF World Junior Team Championships 2026 campaign as young men's singles player Fathurachman overcame the pressure of his world-level team debut to help Indonesia defeat Azerbaijan 2-0 in Cairo, Egypt, on Monday, October 5, 2026.
Fathurachman was trusted to close the second relay game at Cairo International Stadium after Indonesia had built a 44-8 lead. He then defeated Azerbaijan's Amirkhan Imanov to complete the game 55-11.
"Being the closing player, there was certainly some nervousness, especially because this was my first time competing in a team event representing Indonesia," Fathurachman said in a statement from the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) on Monday, October 5, as quoted by Antara.
Despite the nerves, Fathurachman said he experienced no significant problems during the match. Support from Indonesians attending the competition in Cairo also gave him additional motivation as he experienced an event he had previously dreamed of competing in.
"It was exciting and emotional. Finally, I could experience playing at the world junior championships, something I had dreamed of before," he added.
Fathurachman hopes Indonesia's victory over Azerbaijan will provide a positive foundation for the team's campaign for the Suhandinata Cup. The men's singles player also has a strong ambition to help Indonesia advance as far as possible in the tournament.
"My hope is that this team can become champions. Hopefully, we can deliver the best possible result," he concluded.
Indonesia opened its campaign with a 2-0 victory over Azerbaijan after winning the two relay games 55-25 and 55-11. ***
