RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia remained on course for a top-12 finish in the men's volleyball competition at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 in Japan after overcoming the Philippines in a four-set encounter on Thursday, October 1.

The team, coached by Reidel Toiran, defeated the Philippines 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-22, 25-21) in the classification round for positions 9 to 16 at Park Arena Komaki in Okazaki, Aichi, Japan, on Thursday. The victory secured Indonesia a place in the next round for positions 9 to 12, where they will face Vietnam on Friday, October 2.

Indonesia needed time to settle into the match and initially allowed the Philippines to dictate the tempo in the opening set, Antara reported. However, the team gradually found their rhythm and reduced the deficit to 11-13 before scoring four consecutive points to move ahead 18-16. With the momentum on their side, the Garuda squad maintained its advantage and closed out the opening set 25-23.

A similar pattern unfolded in the second set as Indonesia started slowly and found itself engaged in a tightly contested battle. The score remained level at 12-12 midway through the set before Indonesia built a five-point lead at 18-13.

The Philippines responded strongly and erased the deficit to draw level at 23-23. A series of errors from Indonesia in the closing stages allowed the Filipinos to snatch the set 26-24 and level the match.

Indonesia regrouped effectively in the third set. Led by Hendra Kurniawan, the team raced to a 9-4 lead and maintained control despite a brief fightback from the Philippines. They eventually secured the set 25-22.

The fourth set was competitive early on, with both teams level at 10-10. Indonesia seized control by scoring three unanswered points and later extended its advantage to 20-16. Playing with renewed confidence, Indonesia maintained its composure in the closing stages and sealed the set 25-21 to complete the victory.

The result keeps Indonesia's hopes of securing the highest possible classification position outside the quarterfinal bracket alive, with Vietnam now standing between the team and a place in the 9th-12th classification semifinals. ***
