RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia gained valuable international experience in canoe slalom at the 2026 Asian Games as Ade Yoan Sutanto finished seventh in the men’s canoe single final at Yahagigawa Canoe Slalom Course, Japan, on Thursday, October 1.
Ade Yoan completed the course in 155.7 seconds but received 54 seconds in penalties, giving him a total time of 209.7 seconds, according to competition statistics. The result left him outside the medal positions in the final, Antara reported.
China’s Zhicheng Zhang won the gold medal with the fastest time of 98.09 seconds without any penalty. Zhang completed the course significantly faster than his rivals.
Taiwan’s Wu Jung-cheng took silver with a total time of 119.09 seconds. He recorded a course time of 113.09 seconds and received a six-second penalty.
Thailand’s Piyanath Koetsuk won bronze with a total time of 121.68 seconds after completing the course in 117.68 seconds and receiving a four-second penalty.
In canoe slalom, athletes must navigate a boat through a series of gates on a fast-flowing course. Green gates must be passed in the direction of the current, while red gates must be navigated against the current.
Athletes must balance speed with precise maneuvering to complete the course without touching or missing gates. Errors at the gates result in time penalties that are added to the final result.
Penalties can therefore significantly affect an athlete’s final ranking because the result is determined by the combined course time and penalty time. Ade Yoan’s seventh-place finish meant he did not add a medal for Indonesia in canoe slalom at the Asian Games. ***
