RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s men’s and women’s sepak takraw quadrant teams made an encouraging start to their Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 campaigns, with the men’s squad climbing to the top of Group B after securing two victories on the opening day of competition.
The men’s team extended its unbeaten run with a hard-fought 15-12, 10-15, 15-10 victory over host nation Japan at Mizuho Park Gymnasium in Nagoya, Japan, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
The result followed an earlier straight-sets win over South Korea, 15-8, 15-7, giving Indonesia four points from two matches and provisional first place in the group standings.
Despite the victory over Japan, Indonesia faced a difficult challenge in front of a home crowd. The hosts fought back strongly to claim the second set and briefly took control of the match.
“There was definitely an influence from the home supporters, but we were also carried away by our early success. In the second set, we underestimated them, and that’s why we lost it,” said Muhammad Ubaidur Rohman after the match, as quoted by Antara.
Indonesia also trailed early in the deciding third set before regaining momentum. Improved teamwork and patience allowed the team to recover and close out the match.
The men's quadrant squad is represented by Muhammad Hardiansyah Muliang, Saiful Rijal, Muhammad Ubaidur Rohman, Jelki Ladada, Yudha Aswinatama, and Andi Try Sandi Saputra.
Indonesia will conclude its Group B campaign against Singapore on Thursday, October 1, 2026. “Against Singapore, we have to give everything as well. We do not want to lose. We want to go all out,” Ubai emphasized.
Although the men's quadrant event is regarded as one of Indonesia’s strongest medal prospects in sepak takraw, the players remain cautious about potential rivals later in the tournament.
According to Ubai, Myanmar, Vietnam, and India are among the teams to watch. “They are in the other group. Myanmar recently won the King’s Cup by defeating Thailand. India also won at the World Championship in Malaysia. Those are the teams we are anticipating,” he explained.
Indonesia’s women’s quadrant team also enjoyed a successful opening day, recording two victories and matching the men’s unbeaten start. With both teams collecting maximum results so far, Indonesia remains well positioned to advance from the group stage and strengthen its medal prospects in sepak takraw at the Asian Games. ***
