RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia strengthened its presence in the padel competition at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 after women’s doubles pair Novela Putria and Beatrice Gumulya secured a place in the quarterfinals with a straight-sets victory in their opening match.
Competing at Higashi Sports Center in Higashi, Nagoya, Aichi, Japan on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Novela and Beatrice defeated their Iranian opponents 6-3, 6-1 to book their place in the last eight.
“Once we knew we would be facing Iran, we understood they were a strong pair. We had to be more cautious and tried to play as well as possible,” Beatrice said after the match, as quoted by Antara.
The Indonesian duo entered the tournament directly in the round of 16 after receiving a bye in the opening round, making Wednesday’s contest their first appearance at the venue.
Beatrice admitted the pair needed time to adjust to the court conditions and overcome early nerves. “We were quite solid, although we had a slow start. There was some nervousness because this was our first major tournament representing Indonesia,” she added.
Despite those challenges, Novela and Beatrice quickly found their rhythm and controlled much of the match, particularly in the second set, where they limited Iran to just one game.
Following the victory, the pair received feedback from their coaching staff. According to Beatrice, the coaches were satisfied with their technical performance and focused their advice on maintaining confidence and composure.
“The most important thing is how we manage our mentality from the start and overcome the nervousness,” she emphasized.
Indonesia fields four pairs in the padel competition, split equally between the men’s and women’s doubles events. In the women’s draw, Fitriani Sabatini and Fadona Kusumawati had already secured a place in the quarterfinals, giving Indonesia two pairs in the last eight.
The men’s competition features Valentinus Ngurah and Armando Soemarno, along with Giorgio Soemarno and Christian Edison. With both women’s pairs advancing, Indonesia remains firmly in contention as the padel competition moves into the knockout stages. ***
