Climber Aditya Sets New Asian Games Speed Climbing Record

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia gained a strong boost in men's speed climbing after Aditya Tri Syahria broke the Asian Games record and topped the qualification round at the 2026 Asian Games in Portmesse Nagoya Exhibition Hall, Aichi, Japan, on Wednesday, September 30.

Aditya clocked 4.62 seconds in his fourth run in Lane A, making him the fastest climber in qualifying and securing his place in the quarterfinals, Antara reported.

The performance also set a new Asian Games record, improving on the previous mark of 4.95 seconds set by fellow Indonesian climber Veddriq Leonardo at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou on October 3, 2023.

Aditya first broke Veddriq's record in his opening run with a time of 4.74 seconds. He then improved to 4.70 seconds in his third attempt. His 4.70-second mark was temporarily surpassed by China's Jianguo Long, who clocked 4.64 seconds, and eventually finished second in the qualification standings.

Aditya reclaimed the record in his fourth run with 4.62 seconds, 0.02 seconds faster than Long. His performance came after a setback in his second run, when he was recorded for a false start (FS). He responded by producing his fastest time in his final attempt.

Meanwhile, Veddriq finished fifth in qualifying with a best time of 4.78 seconds. He progressively improved from 5.06 seconds in his first run to 4.99 seconds, 4.89 seconds and finally 4.78 seconds in his fourth attempt.

Behind Aditya and Long, China's Shouhong Chu finished third with 4.67 seconds, while Kazakhstan's Damir Toktarov placed fourth with 4.76 seconds. Aditya and the other qualifiers will compete in the men's speed climbing quarterfinals on Thursday, followed by the semifinals and final. ***
