RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia strengthened its presence in the men’s shortboard surfing competition at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 after both I Made Pajar Ariyana and Bronson Meydi secured places in the quarterfinals, keeping the country’s medal hopes alive in the sport. Competing at Pacific Long Beach in Tahara, Aichi, Japan, on Monday, September 28, both Indonesian surfers won their respective third-round heats to advance to the last eight.
Made Pajar delivered the stronger score of the two Indonesians, topping Heat 4 against Thailand’s Tinn Johnson. The 22-year-old collected a total score of 11.50, built from a 6.33-point first wave and a 5.17-point second wave. Johnson finished with 8.50 points after scoring 4.37 and 4.30 on his two waves, leaving Made Pajar comfortably ahead and through to the quarterfinals, Antara reported.
The Bali surfer will next face China’s Shidong Wu in Quarterfinal Heat 2 on Tuesday, September 29, with a semifinal place at stake. Made Pajar had earlier begun his campaign in impressive fashion by winning Heat 5 of the opening round. He recorded a total score of 8.17, combining scores of 4.17 and 4.00 to advance directly to the third round. In that heat, he defeated Bangladesh’s Mohammad Mannan, who scored 5.74, and Afghanistan’s Afridun Amu, who posted 2.44.
Joining him in the quarterfinals is fellow Indonesian surfer Bronson Meydi, who also won his third-round matchup. Competing in Heat 5, the 22-year-old defeated South Korea’s Jun Seo-hyun with a total score of 10.16. Bronson earned 5.33 points on his opening wave and added 4.83 on his second ride to secure victory.
Seo-hyun managed a total of 6.80 points through scores of 3.50 and 3.30, leaving the Indonesian surfer ahead by 3.36 points. Bronson, who is from West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and of Indonesian-Australian heritage, will face Japanese surfer Kanoa Igarashi in Quarterfinal Heat 3 on Tuesday.
Like Made Pajar, Bronson entered the third round after winning his opening-round heat. He topped Heat 4 with a score of 9.84, consisting of 5.17 points on his first wave and 4.67 on his second. His performance was enough to beat Thailand’s Natthakron Sae-Iew, who finished with 7.54 points, and earn direct passage to the third round without having to compete in the second round. ***
