RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's young female karateka Leica Al-Humaira Lubis views her Asian Games bronze medal not as the culmination of her journey, but as motivation to continue improving after narrowly missing out on a place in the final at the 2026 Asian Games.
The 22-year-old karateka from North Sumatra secured the bronze medal in the women's kumite +68kg event at Toyohashi Gymnasium in Toyohashi, Aichi, Japan on Sunday, September 20, 2026, after defeating Kyrgyzstan's Begimai Orozalieva 6-1 in the third-place match.
Although pleased to reach the podium, Leica admitted her personal goal had been to advance to the final. "The publicly stated target was to win a medal, but my personal target was actually to reach the final," Leica said in a statement released by the Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia), on Monday, September 21, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
She believed a place in the gold-medal match had been within reach before a setback in the semifinal ended her title challenge. "My chances of reaching the final were still very good. The opportunity was there, but I made a mistake in the semifinal, and the result was that I couldn't advance," she added.
Leica fell just short of the final after losing a closely contested semifinal bout 3-4 to Thailand's Maneevan Butsuwan. Despite the disappointment, she described the bronze medal as a meaningful reward for the discipline, sacrifices, and hard work she has invested throughout her career. Leica dedicated the medal to her parents, whom she credited for consistently supporting her through both victories and setbacks.
The achievement marked a successful Asian Games debut for Leica. It also continued a strong run in her international career after winning gold in the same category at her first SEA Games appearance in Thailand in 2025.
For Leica, the result serves as both validation of her progress and a reminder that greater achievements remain within reach. "I hope this can be the first step toward making a bigger contribution to Indonesia," she concluded.
By stepping onto the podium in her first Asian Games appearance, Leica added another medal to Indonesia's karate campaign while reinforcing her potential as one of the country's rising athletes on the continental stage. ***
