RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The opening of the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, showcased Indonesia’s cultural identity through two national flagbearers carrying the Red and White. Dewa Ayu Made Sriartha Kusuma Dewi and Daniel Hutapea were entrusted as Indonesia’s flagbearers in the opening ceremony.
The ceremony took place at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya on Saturday, September 19, 2026, starting at 4 p.m. Jakarta time. Their attire incorporated Balinese and Toba Batak elements, bringing local culture onto the Asian sports stage.
Ayu said serving as flagbearer is both a responsibility and an extra source of energy ahead of competing alongside the Indonesian contingent. She hopes the opportunity will inspire her teammates and all Indonesian athletes throughout the Asian Games.
“As a flagbearer, I also have a responsibility to deliver my best performance in competition. I want to turn this moment into additional energy, not just for myself and my Indonesian teammates,” she said on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
Ayu wore attire with Balinese cultural touches, reflecting her region of birth, as she carried the Red and White during the opening ceremony. The look was part of the local cultural theme presented by the Indonesian contingent at this year’s Asian Games.
Daniel likewise carried the Red and White while wearing traditional Toba Batak attire during the opening ceremony. As someone of Batak descent, he said he was proud that the outfit helped showcase Toba Batak cultural elements at the event.
“I am very happy, proud, and grateful to be selected as a flagbearer at the 2026 Asian Games. I am very enthusiastic about taking on this duty because it is part of an important and deeply proud moment for me personally,”said Daniel.
The presence of two athletes from different cultural backgrounds highlighted Indonesia’s diversity through distinctive appearances at the opening of the Asian sporting event. Ayu competes in women’s 5x5 basketball, while Daniel is a karate athlete, each bringing experience from their respective sports.
The 2026 Asian Games opening ceremony could be watched via live broadcast on TVRI and streaming services Vidio and YouTube Rans nationally. The ceremony marked the start of the Indonesian contingent’s journey to compete while introducing the country’s cultural diversity to audiences across Asia and the world. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
