Indonesia Fencers to Train Alongside Japan Team Ahead of Asian Games

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Training alongside Japan’s national fencing team will give Indonesia’s seven fencers valuable competitive exposure as they prepare for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.

The Indonesian fencing team will depart for Japan on September 7, 2026, or 12 days before the Asian Games open on September 19, to begin a training camp, Secretary General of the Indonesian Fencing Association (IKASI) Firtian Judiswandarta said in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 1.

The seven athletes consist of six women and one man who will prepare to compete in foil and sabre events in both individual and team categories.

Firtian said the early departure would allow the athletes to train while adapting to the local environment and further strengthen their preparations before entering the Asian Games competition.

The athletes are scheduled to train in Japan until September 18, before continuing directly to the Asian Games arena. “They will not return to Jakarta but go directly to the competition,” he said on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara.

According to him, traveling directly from the training camp to the competition venue would make the athletes’ preparations more effective because they would not need to make an additional trip to Indonesia before returning to Japan for the Asian Games.

In addition to following their scheduled training program, the Indonesian athletes will train with Japan’s national fencing team, giving them greater experience and exposure to a more competitive atmosphere.

He explained that the opportunity to hold the training camp in Japan was made possible with the support of Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir, who helped establish communication with the Japanese side while attending the Asian Cadet and Junior Fencing Championships in Jakarta last February.

Firtian said the minister directly contacted President of the Japanese National Olympic Committee (NOC) during the event to discuss support for Indonesia’s preparations for the 2026 Asian Games.

The support subsequently opened an opportunity for the Indonesian team to prepare in Japan and train alongside one of the fencing teams that will compete at the Asian Games.

He expressed hope that the athletes would make the most of their preparation time to perform at their best and deliver strong results for Indonesia at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
