RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s men’s doubles shuttlers Ali Faathir Rayhan/Devin Artha Wahyudi made a promising start to their first-ever BWF World Tour Super 750 appearance at the China Masters 2026 in Shenzhen on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, by advancing to the round of 16 after their Malaysian opponents retired.
The young pair, representing Indonesia on one of the sport's biggest stages, secured the opening game 21–16 against fifth seeds Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin before the Malaysians retired.
Devin later explained that the withdrawal came as a surprise, as neither he nor Faathir noticed signs of injury during play. “After I asked, it turned out Izzuddin had been sick with fever since last night. Perhaps retiring was the best decision,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Before the match ended, Faathir/Devin had already shown composure, playing safe while capitalizing on their opponents’ tendency to lift the shuttle, which allowed them to apply pressure.
“We managed to take the first game by playing safe and attacking. The opponents lifted the shuttle often, so it was easier for us to press,” Devin added.
Although their immediate target is reaching the quarterfinals, Faathir emphasized the importance of taking each match step by step, acknowledging the higher level of competition compared to previous tournaments.
“Our target is definitely to do our best. We want to reach the last eight, but we’ll go step by step. It’s not easy because this is our first Super 750,” he concluded.
Next, the Indonesian duo will face Malaysia's Tee Kai Wun/Yap Roy King, who defeated Taiwan’s Zhi-Wei He/Huang Hui-Hsuan 18–21, 21–16, 21–9. ***
