RRI.CO.ID, Sleman - Indonesia's Sleman Regency will host ASEAN Sports Day 2026 from Monday, August 31 to Sunday, September 6. Under the theme “Active Youth, Healthy Future,” the event will promote sports diplomacy and active lifestyles across the ASEAN region.

The event will involve 11 ASEAN countries and three partner countries, Japan, China, and South Korea. Activities will cover sports, culture, education, community wellness, and opportunities supporting the local economy.

Assistant Deputy for Community Sports at Indonesia's Ministry of Youth and Sports, Yayat Suyatna, said sports can strengthen ties between communities across countries. He said ASEAN Sports Day can also encourage people, especially young Indonesians, to adopt active and healthy habits.

“Hopefully, this can revive the spirit of community sports, especially in Yogyakarta,” Yayat said.

Yayat said the event also supports the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports 2026–2030. The five-year plan positions sports as a strategic tool for improving public health, empowering youth, and strengthening regional peace.

He said the impact of ASEAN Sports Day should continue after the event ends. He highlighted whether communities would become more active and exercise regularly as an important measure of success.

ASEAN Sports Day will also support efforts to strengthen ASEAN identity through sports and cultural activities. Sports are expected to serve as a universal language that promotes solidarity, mutual respect, sportsmanship, and unity in diversity.

The program will feature ASEAN Fun Run, Tour de Prambanan, School Hub, a job fair, and traditional sports festivals. It will also include pencak silat workshops, with ASEAN Trail Walk scheduled for September 27.

The Indonesian government expects the event to benefit tourism, creative industries, education, and employment in Sleman and Yogyakarta. Through international participation, ASEAN Sports Day is also expected to strengthen friendships while showcasing Indonesia's cultural and community strengths.
