Jonatan Christie Rises to World No. 1 in BWF Rankings

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie has risen to world No. 1 in the latest BWF men’s singles rankings. The ranking was officially released by the Badminton World Federation on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
The 28-year-old collected 87,631 points, moving up from third place to the top position. He becomes the first Indonesian men’s singles player to reach world No. 1 since Taufik Hidayat.
Jonatan’s rise came despite his early exit at the BWF World Championships 2026 in New Delhi. He was eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke in three games.
The reshuffle was largely influenced by the results of Jonatan’s main rivals at the tournament. Former world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi dropped five places after suffering an early defeat.
Shi Yu Qi was defeated by India’s Ayush Shetty in the round of 64, losing valuable ranking points. Meanwhile, Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn also failed to retain his advantage after reaching only the quarterfinals.
France’s Christo Popov now occupies second place with 87,002 points, only 629 points behind Jonatan. Thailand’s Kunlavut follows in third with 86,915 points, maintaining a close race at the top.
Taiwan’s Chou Tien Chen climbed to fourth with 86,580 points after securing a bronze medal at the world championships. Denmark’s Anders Antonsen sits fifth with 85,405 points, while Shi Yu Qi has 84,075 points.
Jonatan’s achievement adds another milestone to his decorated international career representing Indonesia on the global stage. His major achievements include Asian Games gold in 2018, the 2024 All England title, and Indonesia’s 2020 Thomas Cup victory.
