RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s mixed doubles pair Amri Syahnawi/Nita Violina Marwah advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 BWF World Championships in New Delhi, India, marking a breakthrough on their debut after a commanding win over 2026 All England champions Ye Hong Wei/Nicole Gonzales Chan.
The unseeded duo stunned the ninth‑seeded Taiwanese pair 21‑5, 21‑18 in the round of 16, avenging their straight‑game defeat at the 2025 Taiwan Open.
“We tried to apply pressure from the start and avoided lifting the shuttle too much because Ye has a strong overhead shot. We kept the game at a fast pace,” Nita said in a statement released by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) on Thursday, August 20, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Their aggressive strategy restricted Ye/Nicole to just five points in the opening game. Nita noted that beating the All England champions boosted their confidence. “We lost to them last year, so this victory certainly gives us more belief. We were able to avenge our defeat against a proven champion pair,” she added.
The Taiwanese duo mounted a fightback in the second game, erasing Amri/Nita’s lead with 10 consecutive points. Nicole’s varied serves and relaxed play helped them regain rhythm.
“We lost 10 points in a row, and that needs to be evaluated. They changed their serving variations and played more freely, while we were late to respond, which allowed their confidence to grow again,” Amri admitted.
Despite the pressure, Amri/Nita steadied themselves to close out the match in straight games and secure a place in the last eight.
“Thank God, we reached the quarterfinals at our first World Championships. Now we’ll study our potential opponents’ strengths and weaknesses and discuss strategy with the coach,” Amri. ***
