Youth Football Nations Gather in Kudus for Development and Diplomacy

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Srikandi Merdeka Cup 2026 in Kudus Regency, Central Java, is not just another youth football tournament; it is emerging as a platform for regional cooperation and the growth of women’s football across Asia.

U‑16 womens' national teams from Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China will compete at the Supersoccer Arena from August 14–23, 2026, bringing together diverse playing styles and cultures.

Program Director Teddy Tjahjono highlighted that the participation of seven visiting nations reflects the expanding investment in women’s football development. “This tournament allows young players to measure their abilities and gain valuable experience against opponents with different playing characters,” he said, Thursday, August 13, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Organized by Bakti Olahraga Djarum Foundation in collaboration with the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), the event is designed to provide international‑standard competition and foster growth within the women’s football ecosystem.

Indonesia is fielding two teams--Garuda Pertiwi under coach Timo Scheunemann and Putri Nusantara led by Takumi Taniguchi, a move that underscores the rapid progress of the national women’s program.

Scheunemann described the tournament as a starting point for Indonesia’s resurgence in women’s football, while Taniguchi emphasized confidence and preparation ahead of the AFC U‑17 Qualifiers.

Visiting coaches also see the tournament as crucial preparation. Malaysia’s Fairuz Montana bin Zainal Abidin openly targeted victory over the hosts, stressing his team’s readiness. Thailand’s Thidarat Wiwasukhu noted her squad had been preparing since last month, treating the event as a warm‑up for the upcoming Asian Cup qualifiers.

Beyond competition, the Srikandi Merdeka Cup showcases Kudus as a welcoming host, with organizers emphasizing not only match quality but also facilities, hospitality, and cultural atmosphere.
