RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) has pledged to deepen its collaboration with Indonesia to broaden opportunities for taekwondo's growth as a premier martial art across the region.
The commitment was highlighted during the opening of the 8th Asian Taekwondo Indonesia Open Championships 2026 at Indoor Tennis Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Running from August 1 to 5, the international tournament features 478 taekwondo athletes from 36 countries.
Host nation Indonesia has fielded 31 national team (pelatnas) athletes, comprising 20 kyorugi (sparring) and 11 poomsae (forms) competitors under the Executive Board of Taekwondo Indonesia (PBTI).
The opening ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Tandyo Budi Revita, Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) Chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari, and Chef de Mission for the 2026 Asian Games Todotua Pasaribu.
Taekwondo governing officials commended PBTI's hosting capabilities while emphasizing the role of sports diplomacy and youth engagement in advancing the martial art's reach. President of the Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU), Kim Sang-jin, expressed his appreciation to PBTI for organizing the championship and reaffirmed ATU's long-term partnership goals.
"We want to inspire the younger generation and further strengthen our shared values through martial arts, moving forward, we will continue collaborating with Indonesia and other ATU member national associations to expand opportunities for taekwondo to continuously develop across various regions and communities," Kim Sang-jin said in Jakarta on Sunday, August 2, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Kim also encouraged competing athletes to demonstrate sportsmanship and personal growth throughout the tournament.
"Whatever the result, every effort you make and every challenge you overcome will contribute to the sustainable growth of taekwondo, the taekwondo family will always stand behind you to provide support and encouragement for your success" Kim added. ***
