RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s rising tennis star Janice Tjen is preparing for a milestone moment as she makes her Grand Slam debut on clay at Roland Garros 2026.

Drawn against American player Emma Navarro in the opening round, the matchup promises to be a closely contested battle between two athletes ranked side by side in the world standings.

Currently ranked No. 41, Janice will face Navarro, who sits at No. 39, when the French Open begins on Sunday, May 24, 2026. The draw places the Indonesian in a challenging but exciting position as she steps onto the Paris clay for the first time, Antara reported.

Navarro enters the tournament fresh from competing in the semifinals of the WTA 500 Strasbourg, while Janice’s clay season included appearances at the WTA 1000 Madrid and WTA 1000 Rome, though she exited in the second round of both.

Her most recent outing was at the Morocco Open 2026, where she fell in the round of 16. Both players have had mixed results on clay this season.

Navarro began at the Italian Open 2026, losing in the first round, and later participated in the WTA 125 Trophee Lagardere, where she was stopped in the second round. Janice, meanwhile, has been building experience across higher-tier tournaments, setting the stage for her breakthrough attempt in Paris.

The broader field at Roland Garros adds intrigue. Defending champion Coco Gauff returns to Paris after a strong run to the final in Rome, while Madrid and Rome winners Marta Kostyuk and Elina Svitolina--both outside the WTA Top 5--serve as reminders of the unpredictability of clay.

At the top of the draw, Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 1 and last year’s finalist, enters as the leading seed. ***
