RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s rising tennis player Janice Tjen is set to open her clay-court season at the WTA 1000 Madrid Open 2026 -- held from April 21 to May 3 at the Caja Magica (Park Manzanares) in Madrid, Spain -- aiming to regain form after a challenging run of recent tournaments.

According to the tournament’s official website, Janice will partner fellow Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi in the women’s doubles draw. The duo, who won the WTA 250 Chennai Open title in India in November 2025, will face Ukraine-Denmark pair Martha Kostyuk and Clara Tauson in the opening round, Antara reported.

Janice and Aldila previously teamed up at the Charleston Open 2026 but were eliminated in the first round.

Janice had initially planned to begin her clay season at the Rouen Open last week but withdrew from the WTA 250 event due to injury after representing Indonesia at the Billie Jean King Cup in India.

In Madrid, she was originally scheduled to face 33rd seed Maria Sakkari in the singles draw. However, the match was canceled after Sakkari was elevated to a seeded position to replace Ekaterina Alexandrova, who withdrew due to injury.

As a result, the Jakarta-born player, currently ranked world No. 39, will instead face Russia’s Alina Charaeva, ranked No. 129, in her opening match at La Caja Magica.

Janice has yet to secure a win in her last four tournaments following a strong “Middle East swing,” where solid performances at the Abu Dhabi Open, Qatar Open, and Dubai Championships propelled her into the world’s top 40 for the first time.

In preparation for the “Sunshine Double,” she exited early at the WTA 500 Merida Open in Mexico and also suffered first-round defeats at the WTA 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami.

She continued her campaign in the United States at the Charleston Open but again fell short of a breakthrough result.

Despite these setbacks, Janice delivered strong performances with Indonesia’s team at the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group I in New Delhi, helping the team advance to the play-off qualifiers in April 2026. ***
