National Transportation Day Highlights Connectivity and Sustainable Mobility

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia commemorates National Transportation Day every September 17 as an occasion to highlight the role of transportation in connecting communities and regions across the country. In 2026, the commemoration carries the theme “Connected, Serving, Moving for the Nation.”

It highlights the importance of transportation connectivity in supporting public mobility, goods distribution, and more balanced regional development. Transportation infrastructure in Indonesia has continued to evolve over the years, covering land, sea, and air transportation.

In the land transportation sector, the development of roads, terminals, railway networks, and public transportation has been aimed at connecting economic centers with residential areas. Meanwhile, the development of ports and ferry services has played an important role in strengthening connectivity between islands in Indonesia, an archipelagic country.

In the aviation sector, the development and expansion of airports have also helped broaden public access to various regions. These efforts have continued into the Reform Era, with increasing attention to inter-island connectivity, safety, public services, and the integration of different modes of transportation.

National Transportation Day was established in 1971 as a joint momentum for transportation workers and institutions, replacing various sector-specific transportation commemorations that had previously been held separately. The annual observance has since provided an opportunity to reflect on the development and challenges of Indonesia’s transportation sector.

Today, the integration of various modes of transportation continues to expand through railway services, urban mass transit, the Jabodebek LRT, high-speed rail, ports, the Sea Toll program, as well as the development and expansion of airports across the country. These efforts aim to improve public access, facilitate mobility, and strengthen the distribution of goods, including to remote, disadvantaged, outermost, and border areas.

The development of public transportation is also closely linked to efforts to encourage changes in people's mobility habits. In Jakarta, for example, the growing availability of public transportation provides an alternative to private vehicles while supporting efforts to reduce emissions and promote a more sustainable transportation system.
